BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Alabama A&M University women's basketball team went more than six minutes without a field goal in the opening quarter as UAB built a big lead and rolled to a 80-56 victory on Wednesday night at Bartow Arena.
Alabama A&M (1-2) shot 22.2 percent in the first quarter and could not slow down a hot-shooting UAB team that went 16-of-32 (50 percent) from the floor and led by 18 at the half.
Coriah Beck paced the Bulldogs with 19 points, including 13-of-14 from the free-throw line, along with four rebounds, one block, one assist and one steal.
Moses Davenport added 17 points, on 6-of-9 shooting, with seven boards, three blocks, two steals and one assist.
Cali Smallwood scored 16 of her game-high 29 points in the second half, along with five boards, two assists and one steal to lead UAB. Sofia Munoz poured in 16 points, eight assists, four steals and three boards, while Eleecia Carter chipped in 11 points, three steals, two assists and a pair of rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UAB (1-2) opened the game on a 20-6 run, capped by free throws by Monae' Duffy, with just over two minutes to play and stretched the advantage to 28-9 after one period.
Alabama A&M, which shot 22.2 percent and went the final 6:22 without a field goal in the first period, got a jumper by Davenport 14 seconds in the second to close the gap to 29-11.
The Bulldogs got buckets by
Vanessa Wimberly, Davenport and
Coriah Beck, trimming the margin to 37-21 with just over three minutes left, but the Blazers finished strong, with baskets by Journey Armstead and Carter, sending UAB into the break with a 41-23 lead.
AAMU began the third period cold from the floor as UAB extended its lead to 50-23 after a Carter fastbreak layup with just under seven minutes remaining and the Bulldogs entered the final quarter trailing 59-36.
The Bulldogs could not recover during the final 10 minutes as UAB picked up the home victory.
