BATON ROUGE, La. | Fatima Ramirez and
Rayishon Jackman combined for 32 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Alabama A&M University volleyball team concluded the regular season with a 3-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) loss to Southern on Sunday at Clifford Seymour Gym.
Alabama A&M took the opening two sets, 25-19 and 25-21, but Southern bounced back and outlasted the Bulldogs in the third set, 25-23 and forced a decisive set with a 25-21 win in the fourth. In the fifth set, the Jaguars held off the late charge to claim the 15-13 victory.
Alabama A&M (18-11 overall, 9-7 SWAC) finished with 53 kills, 48 digs, 46 assists, 9.0 total team blocks and nine service aces.
Ramirez led the way with 19 kills, nine digs and four block assists to pace the Bulldogs. Jackman added 13 kills and 13 digs, while
Briana Smith and
Kaydee Smith handed out 22 and 15 assists, respectively.
Kelani Talakai chipped in 11 digs.
Southern (14-16, 9-7) finished with 65 kills, 53 digs, 52 assists, eight service aces and 6.0 total team blocks.
Ariana Brown paced the Jaguars with 19 kills and nine digs, while Bailee St. Romain recorded 14 kills. Jordan Felix dished out 45 assists, while Najah Harris led the defense with 14 digs.
