Bulldogs Can’t Rally in Second Half, Fall to Hornets

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama A&M University men's basketball team could not overcome a 14-point halftime deficit as the Bulldogs fell, 94-52, to Alabama State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Saturday afternoon at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
 
Alabama A&M (10-19 overall, 6-10 SWAC) went more than six minutes without a field goal in the first half and trailed 37-23 at the break. Alabama State (13-14, 10-6) completed the first season sweep over the Bulldogs since the 2020 season.
 
Chad Moodie led the Bulldogs with 11 points and four boards, while Bilal Abdur-Rahman added nine points, five boards and one assist.
 
Amarr Knox paced Alabama State with 22 points, six boards, give assists and three steals. CJ Hines tallied 20 points, three rebounds and two assists, while Micah Simpson posted 13 points, four boards and two assists. TJ Madlock and D'Ante Bass recorded 11 points apiece.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alabama A&M started the game 4-for-4 from the field in taking a 9-6 lead less than three minutes into the game. However, Alabama State responded after the media timeout, grabbing an 11-9 advantage after a bucket by Madlock with 14:27 remaining.
 
The Bulldogs went more than six minutes without a field goal as the Hornets built a 22-14 lead after free throws by Hines with 6:24 left.
 
A Downey jumper closed the gap to 24-19 with just under five minutes to play, but Alabama State responded with free throws by Knox and a layup by Madlock, extending the margin to 28-19 with 4:18 remaining.
 
The Hornets held the Bulldogs to just two field goals over the final four minutes as Alabama State took a commanding 37-23 advantage into the break.
 
Alabama State got a layup by Jasteven Walker, followed by a triple and layup by Knox, as the Hornets extended their lead to 44-23 just 1:30 into the second half.
 
The Hornets stretched the lead to as many as 28 points with just under 17 minutes to play and the Bulldogs could not recover from the big deficit as Alabama State completed the season sweep of AAMU.
