THE HILL | Jaiden Proper struck out a season-high eight batters in five innings as the Alabama A&M University baseball team opened its Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series with Grambling State on Friday afternoon with a 14-3 loss in eight innings at the Bulldog Baseball Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first two innings, Grambling State struck for a run in the top half of the third and added two more runs in the fourth for a 3-0 advantage.
GSU (4-11 overall, 1-0 SWAC) doubled the lead to 6-0 on a three-run homer to left by Nyan Hayes in the top of the fifth and took advantage of a Bulldog error in the sixth for three more runs, pushing the lead to 9-0.
The Tigers put the game away with a five-run eighth inning, extending the advantage to 14-0.
Alabama A&M (4-13, 0-1) added three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Miles Jackson opened the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a base hit up the middle by
Isaac Castro.
AJ Anderson followed with a single to left to load the bases.
Trey Rutledge singled to left as Jackson scored and Castro was thrown out at the plate trying to score.
Kylan Duncan followed with a base hit as Anderson scored. After a pitching change,
Charles Morris hit a two-out single to right as Rutledge came across to score. However,
Dre Amaral flied out to left, ending the game.
GAME NOTES
- Alabama A&M finished with three runs on 10 hits, committed two errors and left five on base
- Trey Rutledge went 2-for-3, with one RBI and one run scored
- Dre Amaral and Isaac Castro also collected two hits
- Jaiden Proper (2-2) took the loss, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on seven hits, with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks in 5.0 innings
- Killian McLaughlin pitched three innings in relief
- Grambling State finished with 14 runs on 13 hits, had one error and stranded six on base
- Nayan Hayes went 2-for-3, with three RBI and two runs scored
- Martavious Thomas, Trey Bridges and Aries Gardner also recorded two hits
- Keanu Jacobs-Guishard went 3-for-5, with two RBI and one run scored
- Mason Martinez (1-2) earned the win, giving up three runs on nine hits, with four strikeouts and one walk in 7.1 innings
- Javier Martinez got the final two outs in relief
