HISTORY … Bulldogs Bringing Home the Hardware

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico | For the first time in program history at the NCAA Division I level, the Alabama A&M University men's golf team celebrated winning a championship as the Bulldogs captured the Hornet Invitational, hosted by Alabama State, on Wednesday afternoon by five strokes at the Grand Reserve Golf Club.

"I am just so incredibly proud of these young men and this team," Alabama A&M head coach Devins Jackson said. "We've been slowly building this program and it all came together with this championship victory. I am so excited that this group is the first in program history to bring home a title at the D1 level."

Alabama A&M fired a final round 295 to complete three rounds with an 888. Chicago State entered the day three back of the Bulldogs in the team standings and finished second, five strokes back, at 893. Texas Southern placed third, with an 896, followed by Southern (923) and host Alabama State (927).

Individually, Alabama A&M had four players finish in the Top 10, led by Lukas Lange.

Lange finished third after shooting a 1-over-par 73 and finished the two-day event with a 217. He recorded 11 pars and three birdies, along with four bogeys during his final round. Samuel Boddie was right on the heels of his teammate and finished tied for fourth, posting a final-round 2-under 70. Boddie's round consisted of 12 pars, four birdies and two bogeys.

Niall Bagnell and Kourey Patterson finished tied for seventh, carding 226s. During the final round, Bagnell had three birdies, while Patterson recorded a pair of birdies. Fabian Sanchez rounded out the individual scoring in 25th place, with a final round 81.

Chicago State's Julian Colavecchia was the individual medalist, shooting a 5-under-par 211 for the three rounds. Yashal Syed, of Texas Southern, was second with a 214, followed by Lange in third.

Alabama A&M returns to action April 7-8 as the Bulldogs will compete in the TSU Big Blue Invitational at the Hermitage Golf Club in Nashville, Tenn.
