NEW ORLEANS | The Alabama A&M University women's tennis team sailed past the Prairie View A&M Panthers, 4-1 on Friday morning in the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament. The victory advances the Bulldogs to the semi final round.
In the doubles session, the Panthers saw a win on court two, but it was court one and three that gave AAMU the dual point. The duo of Naomi Blanks and Ntokozo Zungu defeated Precious Ugochukwu and Cierra Garcia, 6-3, before Yana Dhamija and Alicia Owegi picked a 7-6(3) win on the opening court to claim the point.
All-SWAC second team awardee Sofia Sotelo Raya was the first to add an individual point, defeating Joanne Fernandes 6-1, 6-3 on court five. Following suit on court four was Gabrielle Henderson, who defeated Daniela Garcia 7-6(3), 6-1. The Panthers prevented a shutout after claiming court one, but Valentine Abide Talaki clinched the match for the Bulldogs after claiming a 6-3 straight set win over Amaya Bobadilla.
The Bulldogs will play in the semifinals for the third consecutive year. AAMU is set to face the No. 1 seed Jackson State on Saturday at 10 a.m.
