Men’s and Women’s Tennis Earn ITA All-Academic Team and Scholar Athlete Awards

THE HILL | Both the men's and women's Alabama A&M tennis teams earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team honors, the Association announced Monday afternoon. Additionally, a total of 14 student athletes were named ITA Scholar Athletes, with the entire women's team receiving recognition.

994 Division I Men's student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, and 159 men's tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction. On the women's side, 1,462 Division I women's student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, and 222 women's tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction. 

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements: 

  • Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year 

  • Be listed on the institutional eligibility form 

To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements: 

  • Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale), 

  • All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and 

  • All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year 
     

The AAMU women's tennis team were also named Waylon Simms Team of Academic Achievement and Highest APR team at the 2024-2025 Alabama A&M B.E.S.T Awards. All eight student-athletes (Hannah Nagpall, Yana Dhamija, Gabrielle Henderson, Naomi Blanks, Alica Owegi, Valentine Abide Talaki, Sofia Sotelo Raya and Ntokozo Zungu) were named Scholar Athletes. Dhamija, Owegi, Zungu, Nagpall and Sotelo Raya all earned the award for the second consecutive year.

For the men's program, Freddie Lawrence, Yin Chih Lan, Goran Krivokapic, Kai Cowcher, Agustin Marquez and Tasso Moreira received Scholar-Athlete mentions, with Lawrence and Chih Lan earning the award for the second year in a row and notching the fourth award for Lawrence.

Both Bulldog programs concluded the season in the Semifinal round of the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament, each falling in narrow 4-3 decisions to the Jackson State Tigers. Sotelo Raya, Abide Talaki and Zungu were all named to the All-SWAC Second Team. Moreira was named to First Team on the men's side, while Marqez, Chih Lan and Cowcher received second team distinctions.
