THE HILL | Despite a strong defensive showing, the Alabama A&M University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Jackson State in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener on Friday afternoon at the Bulldogs Soccer Field.
Jackson State (2-5-2 overall, 1-0-0 SWAC) broke the early 0-0 tie in the 14
th minute as Kyla Gomez's goal beat AAMU goalkeeper
Madelyn Cornwell, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The lead remained 1-0 until the 76
th minute as Ryanne Hawthron-Harper doubled the scoreline with a goal as the Tigers stretched the margin to 2-0.
Weather played a significant part in the next few minutes as officials delayed the game due to thunderstorms before ending the contest in the 79
th minute with JSU winning the SWAC opener, 2-0.
INSIDE THE BOX:
- Madelyn Cornwell finished with three saves
- Taylor Osborn registered six saves for JSU
- Both teams recorded four corner kicks and six shots on goal
- Sophomore Anita Frederick-Sigaran led AAMU with two shots on goal
- AAMU had nine fouls compared to JSU's six fouls
