THE HILL | The Alabama A&M women's basketball team never trailed Thursday night as the Bulldogs used a strong second quarter and balanced scoring effort to earn a 69-59 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Jackson State at the AAMU Event Center.
Alabama A&M (6-9, 2-1 SWAC) opened the game with energy on both ends of the floor, holding Jackson State scoreless for the first several minutes while building a 13-6 advantage after the opening quarter. The Bulldogs continued to apply pressure in the second period, outscoring the Tigers 23-19 to take a 36-25 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs maintained control throughout the second half, pushing the margin to as many as 17 points in the second quarter and closing the third period ahead 53-42. Jackson State attempted to mount a comeback in the fourth, but Alabama A&M responded with timely baskets and defensive stops to secure the home conference victory.
Jaida Belton, the SWAC's Impact Player of the Week, led Alabama A&M with a double-double, finishing with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Kaila Walker and
Moses Davenport each added 12 points, while
Rakiyah Beal chipped in 10 points.
Alabama A&M shot 47.9 percent from the field and outrebounded Jackson State 34-25, including a 14-4 advantage in second-chance points. The Bulldogs also scored 13 points on the fast break and forced 19 Jackson State turnovers.
Jackson State (2-12, 0-2 SWAC) was led by Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua with 16 points and seven rebounds. Angel Wilkinson tossedin 11 points, while Rhema Pegues added seven points.
