Alabama A&M Avenges SWAC Loss in Rolling Past MVSU

THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University women's basketball avenged its only Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) loss on Saturday, rolling past Mississippi Valley State, 95-55, at the AAMU Event Center to stretch its winning streak to 12 straight games.

Alabama A&M (16-9 overall, 12-1 SWAC) briefly trailed early on and took control, taking a 24-8 advantage into the second period. The Bulldogs led 43-20 at the break and cruised into the second half to split the season series with Mississippi Valley State.

Kalia Walker led four AAMU players in double figures with 22 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Coriah Beck posted a double-double of 18 points and 11 boards, with six assists and three steals. Aniya Palmer chipped in 13 points and nine boards, while Jaida Belton added a double-double of 13 boards and 12 points.

Sydney Thompson led Mississippi Valley State (4-19, 3-9) with 12 points, two steals and two boards, while Ariel Jefferson recorded 11 points and three boards.

Alabama A&M set the tone early, using defensive pressure and second-chance opportunities to surge ahead 24-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs forced turnovers and turned them into transition points, highlighted by a 14-0 scoring run midway through the period.

The momentum continued in the second quarter as AAMU dominated the paint and the glass. A layup by Belton and a transition bucket from Beck pushed the advantage beyond 20, and the Bulldogs carried a commanding 43-20 lead into halftime.

Out of the break, Alabama A&M continued to attack. Beck knocked down a three-pointer early in the third quarter before Rakiyah Beal converted in transition to stretch the lead to 50-22. Mississippi Valley found a brief rhythm from beyond the arc, but the Bulldogs answered with balanced scoring and strong rebounding to maintain control, leading 68-45 entering the final frame.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Bulldogs' depth, as the bench added key contributions and the defense held MVSU to just 10 points in the period. AAMU closed the game on a strong note, building its largest lead of the afternoon at 41 points en route to the 40-point victory.
