NEW ORLEANS, La. | Anthony Mateo had his second strong outing on the mound, pitching seven innings as the Alabama A&M University baseball team held off a late rally by ULM to defeat the Warhawks, 11-7, on Saturday afternoon at the Maestri Classic.
Mateo (1-0) was sharp in his seven innings, surrendering just one run on five hits, with one strikeout and one walk.
Meanwhile, the bats continued to stay hot as
Keilon Parnell went 3-for-4, with two runs scored and one RBI and DeVante Wells was 1-for-2, with three RBIs and two runs scored.
AJ Anderson also collected three hits and scored once, while
Keondre Fields drive in two and added two hits.
Alabama A&M (2-4) has now won back-to-back games for the first time since defeating Oakwood and Mississippi Valley State in March last season.
The Bulldogs plated four runs in the opening inning and never trailed. Alabama A&M finished with 13 hits and seven walks, capitalizing on four ULM errors while scoring in five different innings.
AAMU struck first with a four-run first, highlighted by timely contact and aggressive baserunning. The Bulldogs added two more in the fourth and four in the fifth to build a 10–1 advantage. Wells delivered the big swing of the day with a three-run home run in the fifth inning — his first of the season — to push the lead into double digits.
ULM mounted a six-run rally in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 10–7, but the Bulldogs' bullpen regrouped to halt the momentum.
Nick Espinola and
Antonio Torres combined to close the door, with Torres tossing a scoreless ninth to preserve the win.
