Alabama A&M Falls to Tennessee Tech in Holiday Inn Classic

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team could not recover from surrendering four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Bulldogs fell, 7-4, to Tennessee Tech in the Holiday Inn Classic on Saturday at Bush Stadium.
 
The Bulldogs (2-8) collected nine hits and committed no errors, but a four-run eighth inning by Tennessee Tech proved to be the difference.
 
Alabama A&M struck first in the third inning. After two quick outs, Miles Jackson delivered a two-run double to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Jackson finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a walk, driving in both runs with two outs.
 
Tennessee Tech (6-5) answered in the bottom of the third, plating three runs to take a 3-2 advantage. The Golden Eagles were fueled by a home run from Jorsixt Jimenez, who later finished with four RBI in the contest.
 
Anthony Mateo (1-1), the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Co-Pitcher of the Week,  took the loss despite a solid outing on the mound. The right-hander worked 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out two.
 
The Bulldogs threatened throughout the middle innings but were unable to capitalize, finishing 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
 
Tennessee Tech broke the game open in the eighth, scoring four runs to extend its lead to 7-2.
 
The Bulldogs pushed across two runs in the final frame, but the comeback fell short.
 
Brycen Hammonds connected for a solo home run earlier in the game and finished with two RBI, while Devante Wells turned in a strong performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple. 
 
Jaxson Pease earned the win in relief for Tennessee Tech, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five.
 
UP NEXT
Alabama A&M closes out the Holiday Inn Classic on Sunday against Illinois Chicago. First pitch against the Flames is scheduled for 10 a.m. from Quillen Field at Bush Stadium at the Averitt Express Baseball Complex in Cookeville, Tenn.
