THE HILL | The Alabama A&M softball team jumped out to an early lead but Detroit Mercy used late offense to secure an 11-7 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Bulldog Field.
The Bulldogs struck first in the second inning when Lily Calderon advanced into scoring position and came home on an RBI groundout from Kara Burman to give Alabama A&M a 1-0 lead.
Detroit Mercy answered in the third inning with three runs to take the lead, but Alabama A&M responded with its biggest offensive surge of the afternoon. The Bulldogs plated five runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a three-RBI double from Josefina Lacalle that helped swing the momentum and give AAMU a 6-3 advantage.
The Titans battled back in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a combination of timely hits and defensive miscues to score four runs and regain a 7-6 lead. Alabama A&M responded in the bottom half when Grace Cruthis delivered an RBI double down the left-field line, tying the game at 7-7.
Detroit Mercy reclaimed control in the sixth inning with a two-RBI single to move back in front before adding two insurance runs in the seventh to seal the contest.
Lacalle led the Bulldogs offensively with three RBI, while Calderon collected two hits and Cruthis added a double and an RBI. Alabama A&M finished the game with seven hits and six RBI.
Game two was called due to weather.

Alabama A&M will remain home to host Jackson State at the Bulldog Softball Field on Friday, March 13th. First pitch is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
