BALDWIN, N.Y. | Alabama A&M University women's basketball head coach Dawn Thornton has been named to the 2025–26 Advancement of Blacks in Sport (ABIS) Black Coaches Watch List, recognizing coaches who are making a significant impact within college basketball while helping advance opportunities for Black professionals in athletics.
The ABIS Black Coaches Watch List highlights coaches who demonstrate excellence in leadership, performance and influence within the sport. The organization works to connect and inspire leaders who advocate for racial equity and social and economic justice across the sports industry.
Thornton previously earned the recognition during her first season leading the Bulldogs, guiding Alabama A&M through one of the most successful seasons in program history while establishing a strong foundation for the program's future.
"I'm honored to be named to the ABIS Basketball Coaches Watch List," said Thornton. "This recognition speaks to the culture we're building, the incredible young women I get to coach and the impact we're working to make through the game every day."
Thornton is one of only two Southwestern Athletic Conference head coaches included on the watch list, joining Southern head coach Carlos Funchess.
