Bulldogs Fight Hard in Loss to Gamecocks

MADISON, Ala. | The Alabama A&M baseball team surrendered seven runs in the ninth inning and could not rally as the Bulldogs fell, 12-7, to Jacksonville State on Wednesday afternoon at Toyota Field.

After a scoreless first three innings, Jacksonville State (18-4) broke through with a run in the fourth to grab a 1-0 lead.

The lead remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Alabama A&M struck for five runs on four hits to take a 5-1 advantage.

With one down in the frame, Zak Rice singled to left center and advanced to second on a Devante Wells base hit to left. Both runners advanced on wild pitch and Miles Jackson drew an intentional walk to load the bases. After Rice scored on a wild pitch, AJ Anderson delivered the big hit, a single through the right side to plate Jackson and Wells. Tarris Murray was hit by a pitch and after a pitching change, both runners scored when Tervell Johnson doubled down the line in left.

Back came the Gamecocks in the top of the seventh as Jacksonville State took advantage two walks, two hit batters and one error to score four runs, tying the game at 5.

Jacksonville State used the long ball in the top of the ninth, belting three homers, as the Gamecocks erupted for seven runs to grab a 12-5 lead.

Alabama A&M (7-16) picked up two runs in the bottom of the inning, but could not complete the rally.

Evan Hurlburt started on the mound for the Bulldogs and gave up just one hit in two innings of work. Edyn Barber, Raymond Clark, Avery Seaton, Jordan Nolley, Grant Minor, Jose Valero, Daveyon Lavender, Bryce Dolce and Charles Morris (1-1) saw action in relief.

James Wilson gave up four runs on five hits, fanned six and walked on in 5.1 innings for the Gamecocks. Josh Sibley, Fisher Cantrell (1-1), Sam Schmidt and Charlie Horst worked out of the bullpen.
