ITTA BENA, Miss. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team allowed four runs in the first inning and nearly completed the comeback as Mississippi Valley State completed a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series sweep on Sunday afternoon with a 9-8 victory at Magnolia Field.
Mississippi Valley State (7-17 overall, 3-6 SWAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Alabama A&M (7-23, 2-7) responded with two runs in the top of the second to close the gap to 4-2.
Back came the Delta Devils in the bottom of the frame, with three runs to push the margin to 7-2.
AAMU chipped away at the deficit, scoring once in the third and two more in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 7-5.
But Mississippi Valley State extended its lead to 9-5 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
However, the Bulldogs slowly crawled back into the game with one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to close the gap to 9-8.
Alabama A&M had two runs on, with two outs, in the top of the ninth, but could not plate the tying run as Mississippi Valley State completed the sweep.
The Bulldogs finished with eight hits as
Brycen Hammonds and
AJ Anderson each collected a pair of hits.
Brady Baxter took the loss as he surrendered seven runs (six earned) on six hits, with two walks and one strikeout in 1.1 innings.
Nick Espinola,
Avery Seaton and
Terence Sales pitched in relief.
Gage Deutsch started for the Delta Devils and was one of eight pitchers used. Deutsch gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits, walked four and fanned two in two innings. James Snipes, Matthew Cuzco, Kobe Ladd, Angel Escobar, Jace Jones, Brock Lenhardt and Chris Brown saw action out of the bullpen.
