Stanfield’s Homer Lifts AAMU past Clark Atlanta

THE HILL | KJ Stanfield belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the Alabama A&M University baseball team edge Clark Atlanta, 11-10, on Wednesday afternoon at the Bulldog Baseball Field.

Clark Atlanta (5-11) struck first in the opening inning, scoring two runs to grab an early 2-0 lead. Alabama A&M (5-8) quickly answered in the bottom of the frame when AJ Anderson lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Miles Jackson to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Bulldogs evened the score in the second inning as Wilmer Cuevas blasted a solo home run to left field. Later in the inning, Jackson reached on a fielder's choice that brought Zak Rice home, giving Alabama A&M its first lead of the afternoon at 3-2.

Alabama A&M added to its advantage in the third inning. Rice drew a bases-loaded walk to score Tervell Johnson before a wild pitch allowed Keondre Fields to cross the plate, pushing the lead to 5-2.

The Bulldogs extended the margin to 6-2 in the fourth when Johnson grounded out to second base, scoring Jackson from third.

Alabama A&M then broke the game open in the fifth inning with three runs. Colin Mason delivered an RBI double to left field, Jackson followed with an RBI triple to center, and Brycen Hammonds added a run-scoring double to give the Bulldogs a 9-2 advantage.

Clark Atlanta responded with a huge sixth inning, plating six runs on six hits to pull within 9-8.

The Panthers tied the game in the eighth, setting the stage for Stanfield's two-run homer, giving Alabama A&M the 11-9 advantage.

Clark Atlanta added a run in the ninth, but Bulldog reliever William Tarpley closed the door to earn the save.

Charles Morris picked up the win in relief for Alabama A&M after tossing 1.1 innings.

Offensively, the Bulldogs finished with 13 hits. Jackson led the way with two hits, three runs scored, two RBI, and two triples, while Cuevas and Fields each added two hits.
