NEW ORLEANS, La. | Alabama A&M women's tennis saw its SWAC Tournament run come to a close with a tightly contested 4-3 loss to Alabama State on Saturday at City Park Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs came out strong, claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Tstitsi Mahere and Alicia Owegi secured a hard-fought (7-6) victory at No. 1 doubles, while Gabrielle Henderson and Sofia Sotelo Raya added a (6-3) win at No. 2 to give Alabama A&M the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles play, Alabama A&M continued to battle across the lineup. Sofia Sotelo Raya delivered a dominant straight-set victory at No. 3 singles, winning (6-1), (6-4), while Nardine Salem added another point for the Bulldogs with a three-set win at No. 5 singles, (6-1),(4-6), (6-1).
With the match hanging in the balance, Alabama State secured wins in four singles courts, including key three-set victories at No. 2 and No. 4, to edge past the Bulldogs and clinch the 4-3 decision.
Despite the loss, Alabama A&M showed resilience throughout the match, pushing multiple courts to three sets and competing point-for-point in a hard-fought postseason battle.
