BATON ROUGE, La. | The Alabama A&M University baseball team could not recover from an early deficit in falling, 13-7, to Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Friday night at Lee-Hines Stadium.

Southern (26-21 overall, 19-7 SWAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and led 9-1 after four innings.

Alabama A&M (10-43, 4-25) tried to rally in the fifth by scoring four runs on four hits and took advantage of one Jaguar error.

With one down in the frame,
Tarris Murray singled and stole second.
Zak Rice followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Murray and
AJ Anderson ripped a base hit to left.
Keondre Fields brought Rice across with a double to center.
Colin Mason drew a walk to load the bases. After a pitching change, Fields scored on a wild pitch as the Bulldogs closed the gap to 9-5.

Southern plated a run in the bottom of the frame to push the lead to 10-5.

Alabama A&M answered in the sixth with two runs, cutting the deficit to 10-7, but the Jaguars ended any chance of a rally with three runs in the eighth for the 13-7 victory.

Fields paced the Bulldogs offense by going 2-for-3, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Rice was 2-for-4, with a pair of RBIs. Murray also collected a pair of hits.

Anthony Mateo (4-6) took the loss as he gave up nine runs on 11 hits, with two strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 innings.
Brady Baxter and
Edyn Barber worked out of the bullpen.

Myles Dismute (6-2) earned the victory by pitching 4.1 innings. He gave up five runs (two earned) on eight hits, fanned five and walked four. Quincy Thornton, Stephen Tolbert, Jayden Lawrence and Caleb Ellis pitched in relief.

Alabama A&M concludes the season with the SWAC series finale on Saturday against Southern. First pitch against the Jaguars is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Lee-Hines Stadium.
