Alabama A&M Earns Pair of Five-Set Victories in Day One of KSU\GSU Tournament

KENNESAW, Ga. | Alabama A&M volleyball displayed its resilience Friday, securing a pair of five-set victories over West Georgia and Georgia State at VyStar Arena.


The Bulldogs opened the day with a 3-2 win over West Georgia before closing the doubleheader with another five-set triumph against Georgia State. With the two victories, Alabama A&M improved to 5-1 on the season.


In the opening match, AAMU defeated West Georgia by scores of 25-23, 27-29, 23-25, 27-25 and 15-8.


Rayishon Jackman led the Bulldogs with 19 kills while hitting .375. She added 16 digs and three service aces to complete a double-double. Gerren Tomlin contributed 12 kills and 11 digs, while Cherrish Robinson finished with eight kills and six total blocks.


After dropping the second and third sets, Alabama A&M fought off West Georgia in an extended fourth frame to earn a 27-25 victory and force a decisive fifth set. The Bulldogs carried that momentum into the finale, holding the Wolves to a negative hitting percentage and pulling away for a 15-8 win.


Alabama A&M finished the match with 61 kills, nine service aces and 10 total blocks. Briana Smith recorded 31 assists, while Kaydee Smith added 20. Kelani Talakai led the back row with 18 digs.


The Bulldogs returned to the court later Friday and outlasted Georgia State, 21-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-12 and 15-13.


After falling behind 2-1 in the match, AAMU delivered a dominant response in the fourth set. The Bulldogs limited Georgia State to a -.257 hitting percentage and forced 13 attack errors en route to a 25-12 victory.


The deciding set featured seven ties and three lead changes before Alabama A&M prevailed, 15-13. The Bulldogs produced 10 kills and hit .421 in the final frame.


Jackman again paced the offense, finishing with 18 kills, 12 digs and two service aces. Amya Jennings delivered an efficient performance with 11 kills on a .417 hitting percentage and six block assists. Tomlin added 11 kills, 12 digs and two aces for a double-double.


Briana Smith handed out 25 assists and collected 10 digs, while Kaydee Smith recorded 19 assists. Talakai led the Bulldogs defensively with 15 digs.


Alabama A&M totaled 54 kills, 68 digs, seven service aces and eight blocks today.
