Although securing a five point 21-16 cushion at halftime, the Alabama A&M womens basketball was outscored 43-33 in the second half as they fell to the visiting Tigers of Tennessee State, 59-54. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 2-4 on the season. The Bulldogs will travel to Murray, Ky. to play Murray State. The game is slated for 7 p.m.
Katrich Williams led all A&M scorers, and tied for a game-best with 15 points on 3-of-6 (50 percent) shooting from the field and 8-for-9 (89 percent) from the charity stripe. Brittney Manning and Nesfayia Watkins added seven points apiece. Freshman Whiquitta Tobar chipped in with six points and three boards in her first career start. Ashleonte Samuel pulled down a game-best eight rebounds.
The Tigers came out the lockerroom and scored five unanswered points in the first two minutes of the second period to knot the score at 21. TSU achieved its first advantage of the game, 24-23, at 17:32 off a trey by Kendra Appling. Tenn. State led by as many as 10 points, 39-29, with 13:10 remaining in regulation before the Bulldogs ripped off a 11-3 run to cut it to one, 42-41, with just under nine minutes left. A&M took a short-lived one point advantage off a Tobar layup, but two free throws gave the Tigers the lead again. The Bulldogs could never regain the momentum and were edged 59-54.
For TSU, Tiffany Jackson led her team with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor. Appling 15 points and seven rebounds. Nikki Rumph scored 10 points on the afternoon.
As a team, A&M shot 47.8 percent (22-for-46) from the field held a 33-32 edge on the glass over Tenn. State. The Bulldogs are back in action Dec. 17 when they travel to play Murray State for a 7 p.m. tip.
