Box Score / ITTA BENA, MS - The Alabama A&M women's basketball team won its third straight game, 56-40, in Itta Bena, Miss. at Mississippi Valley State Saturday Jan. 10. The Bulldogs have won every game in the year 2009 and improve to 5-8 on the season. The team is back in action on Monday Jan. 12 at Arkansas-Pine Bluff for its second SWAC game of the weekend. The game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start.
A&M had 10 players reach the scorer's column. This marks the first game this season the Bulldogs have not had anyone in double figures. Katrich Williams had nine points and three boards. Erica Thompson, Brittany Manning, and Chaymieyon Moss each tallied eight points. Nesfayia Watkins chipped in with seven points and a career-high six boards.
The first half was a low scoring affair as the Nesfayia Watkins’ pair from the stripe at the 18 minute mark put A&M on the scoreboard. Both teams experienced a shooting drought until Erica Thompson’s layup at the 14:31 mark ended the Bulldog drought. However, Mississippi Valley’s first points of the game did not come until 14:11 mark off a basket by Brittany Rochelle.
The Bulldogs held a 21-20 edge heading into the lockerroom. After the first 20 minutes, Moss led A&M with six points and Watkins had four points – all from the charity stripe. For the Lady Devilettes, Coby Stallings led her team with nine points and three steals.
The second half was filled with more action as the Lady Devilettes came out of intermission and hit two straight baskets. A&M regain the advantage three minutes into the second period off a Manning layup. The Bulldogs went on an 8-0 to achieve a 12 points cushion - its largest of the game - at 38-26 midway through the second 20. MVSU sliced into the advantage and cut it to 38-31 at the 7:56 mark. A&M however, pushed the lead back to double digits off a Marshall trey. The Devilettes did not have an answer and the Bulldogs cruised to the 56-40 victory.
Miss. Valley was led by Colby's 11 points and six steals. Ashley Brown and Kanesha Smith had nine and eight points, respectively. Michelle Messaga pulled down 10 off the glass for the Lady Devilettes. MVSU was held to a 22.4 shooting clip, hitting only 13 baskets out of 58 attempts.
The Bulldogs will play at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Mon. Jan. 12 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
