Bulldogs Edge Lady Braves, 60-54

Box Score / Photo Gallery The Bulldogs edged the Lady Braves of Alcorn State, 60-54 at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium in Huntsville on Saturday. The Alabama A&M women's basketball team was led by Katrich Williams' 14 points. Ashleonte Samuel had nine points and six boards. Nesfayia Watkins tallied eight points and four rebounds. Chaymieyon Moss blocked four shots and chipped in with seven points on the night. The team improves to 7-9 on the season, including 5-1 in SWAC play. The Bulldogs are back on Mon. Jan. 26 when they host Southern for a 5:30 p.m. tip.

A&M dominated the first half, achieving an 11 point cushion - its largest of the half - at the 8:45 mark off a basket by Whiquitta Tobar. The Bulldogs went into intermission with a 33-25 advantage. Williams had eight points in the first 20 for A&M, while Chelsea Marshall had seven. For the Lady Braves, Ashley Hawkins recorded six points.

Alcorn sliced into the Bulldog advantage by opening up the second period with a 5-1 run to cut it to four, 34-30 at 18:03. The Lady Braves would get no closer, however, as A&M held on to the lead for the entire half - leading by as many as 13 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Alcorn scored seven unanswered points in 57 seconds, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs pulled off the 60-54 victory.

The Lady Braves were led by Kiara Ruffin's 12 points off the bench. Corneshia Hollins tallied 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting in 21 minutes of action. Sharnika Breedlove and Hawkins chipped in with eight points a piece. With the loss, Alcorn falls to 3-17 overall and 2-5 in the SWAC.

As a team the Bulldogs shot 40 percent from the field (20-for-49), and hit 10-of-20 baskets in the second half. The Braves shot 19-for-52 from the floor for a 36.5 percent clip. A&M held a 38-35 advantage on the boards over Alcorn, including 25 offensive rebounds. The Bulldogs also held a 22-14 edge in the paint.
