The Jaguars were up by three with 30 seconds remaining in the game off two free throws by Tiffany Foster. A Jaguar foul sent Chelsea Marshall to the line, who knocked down both two at the stripe to bring the Bulldogs to within one, 55-54, with eight seconds left. Southern's Hannah Kador made the back end of a penalty shot to put her team up by a basket. The Bulldogs attempt at a last second shot to send the game into overtime was unsuccessful as A&M fell to Southern (9-7, 6-2 SWAC) 56-54 at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium on Monday night. Alabama A&M (7-10, 5-2 SWAC) will play travel to Houston, Tex. to face Texas Southern on Sat. Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m.
A&M was up by seven, with 13:28 on the clock off a Chaymieyon Moss layup. Southern ripped off a 8-2 run to take its first advantage of the game, 41-40, midway through the second period. A&M regained the lead off a pair from Katrich Williams at the line with just under six minute remaining in regulation. The Bulldogs proceeded to battle back and forth with the Jaguars, but Southern ultimately came away with the win.
Williams was 3-for-6 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 from the free throw line for a team-high 14 points in 32 minutes of action. Moss tallied 10 points, seven boards and a season-high six blocks. Jenn Collier chipped in with nine points. Ashleonte Samuel and Chelsea Marshall recorded eight points apiece. Samuel also pulled down a team-high six off the glass. The Bulldogs held the advantage on the boards, 39-38.
A&M controlled the entire first half from the opening tip as Williams trey from the wing within the first 30 seconds opened up scoring and set the tone for the first 20 minutes. Another Williams triple halfway through the period gave the Bulldogs a double digit cushion, 17-6. The Jaguars used a 10-2 run to chip into the lead and cut it to 19-16 with 6:09 remaining in first half. A&M held a 28-25 advantage heading into the lockerroom.
At the half, Williams led all Bulldog scorers with seven points. Deidra Jackson also had seven for SU. A&M shot 10-for-24 for a 41.7 percent clip, with holding the Jaguars to a 33.3 percentage (8-for-24). For the game, the Bulldogs finished with a 33.3 shooting percentage.
Southern was lead by Kador's game-high 18 points, including a 10-for-13 mark from the charity stripe. Jackson finished with 12 points.
A&M is set to play Texas Southern on Sat. Jan. 31. The game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
