A&M Holds off JSU For Second Straight Victory

The Alabama A&M women's basketball team ripped of 11 unanswered, highlighted by a trey from Erica Thompson to take a five point advantage, 47-42 with 12:45 remaining in regulation over the visiting Tigers of Jackson State. A Nesfayia Watkins layup sparked the Bulldogs to go on a 13-7 run over a six-plus span to achieve an 11 point cushion at 62-51 - the largest of the game - with 5:52 left in the game. JSU scored seven straight to cut the margin to four with just under three minutes to play, but A&M held the Tigers off for its second straight SWAC win. The team is back in action on Saturday Jan. 10 when they travel to Itta Bena, Miss. to play Mississippi Valley State beginning at 5:30 p.m.

With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 4-8 on the season and remain undefeated in conference play. JSU falls to 3-9 overall, including 0-2 in the SWAC.

Ashleonte Samuel led A&M with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting in 29 minutes of action. Watkins had 11 points and six rebounds. Thompson and Katrich Williams both tallied eight apiece. The Bulldogs scored 24 points off 24 total JSU miscues.

Jackson State jumped out to a 6-0 lead, before a basket by Thompson and a traditional three-point play by Samuel brought A&M to within one, 8-7 with 16:22 left in the half. The lead changed hands six times throughout the opening period and JSU led by as many as five, 31-26, at the 2:14 mark off a pair of free throws by DeQuisha Davis. The Bulldogs scored seven unanswered to cut it to 34-33 heading into the lockerroom.

In the first 20, Brittany Manning had six points on 3-of-5 shooting from the floor. As a team A&M was 13-for-23 from the field for a 56.5 percent shooting clip. The Tigers shot 46.4 percent behind Shaneese Mclin's 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting. Mclin recorded 12 points for the game.

For the game, the JSU was lead by Danielle Cooper's game-high 16 points and five boards. DaQuisha Davis chipped in with 11 points.

A&M will play at Mississippi Valley on Jan. 10. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
