The Alabama A&M women's basketball team held off the Lady Tigers of Grambling State for a 54-53 win at the Assembly Center in Grambling, La. Jenna Collier scored a season-high 11 points to lead the Bulldogs. Dominisha Johnson tallied nine points and six boards in 20 minutes of action. Erica Thompson dished out four assists in the victory. With the win, A&M sweeps the season series with Grambling and improves to 9-8 in the league, and a 11-16 overall mark. Grambling drops to 6-11 in the conference and 8-19 overall. The Bulldogs will play their final game of the regular season on Sat. March 7 at Jackson State.
The Bulldogs took a commanding 20-5 lead midway through the first period. The Tigers used a 21-7 run over five plus minutes to slice into the advantage to bring the margin to 27-26 with just over three minutes before halftime. A&M responded by scoring seven unanswered to take a 34-26 advantage after the first 20 minutes of play. The Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the floor in the first period, connecting 14-of-28 attempts.
In the second period, GSU tied it up at 37-37 off a basket by Jasher Blocker. The Tigers scored seven straight to take their first lead (50-49) since the opening minute of the game at the 15:18 mark. A&M quickly retook the lead and lead by one point with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. Grambling's two last second atempts within the last 10 seconds were unsuccessful as the Bulldogs held off the Tigers for the win.
For the Tigers, Blockers led all scorers with 12 points and eight rebounds. Rachele Dobbins and Gabrielle Fleming chipped in with seven points each. Fleming also added seven boards.
The Bulldogs will face Jackson State on Sat. March 7.
