The Alabama A&M women's basketball team dropped its regular season finale 72-52 to Jackson State on Sat. March 7. The Bulldogs, who were held to just 15 second half points, only connected on six hoops out of 31 attempts. Katrich Williams led A&M with 15 points and a career-best six steals. With the loss, the Bulldogs finish 9-9 in the SWAC and 11-17 overall mark. A&M will either be the fifth seed heading into post-season play and will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff for the first time in the opening round of the SWAC Tournament.
The Lady Tigers led by as many as eight points, 16-8, at the 13:43 mark of the first half. The Bulldogs used a 12-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 20-18, midway through the first period. A&M held a 37-33 advantage at the half. Williams had a hot hand in the first 20 as she was 4-of-7 from the field for 12 points in 16 minutes. The Bulldogs shot 51 percent (15-of-29) at the end of the period. JSU was held to a 43 percent clip (12-of-28).
JSU started the second half with 20 unanswered points over a six-plus span to take a 53-37 margin at the 13:30 mark. A Whiquitta Tobar layup at the 13 minute mark broke the ice and gave A&M its first field goal of the half. The Bulldogs were unable to fully recover from the deficit as the Tigers push the spread to as many as 22 with just under a minute to play.
Erlexis Cooper led the Tigers with a game-best 35 points and 11 boards. DeQuisha Davis finished with 13 points. Erica Trahan had 11 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
The Bulldogs will travel to Birmingham to play in the SWAC Tournament as the fifth seed and will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Fair Park Arena.
