Battle of Bulldogs Goes to Samford

Four-run seventh dooms A&M

Alabama A&M battled Samford for the greater portion of Wednesday's Bulldog baseball showdown in Birmingham. The two teams were tied 3-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning before Samford scored four runs with the help of two home runs to provide the game's final runs and win 7-3. After a 45 minute rain delay at the beginning of the game, A&M fought back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game on Chris Jennings' two-run double in the fifth. Jennings ended the night 2-2, and Fabian Harper was 3-4 with two runs scored to lead the A&M offense.

A.J. Campbell fell to 1-5 with the loss on the mound, but worked 6.1 innings and gave up just four earned runs and eight hits. Stephen Ballard led off the seventh with a home run to give Samford the lead for good.  Three batters later, Bo Smith homered off reliever Juan Flores to provide the needed insurance for the hosts.

AAMU (14-25) managed just two other hits besides those provided by Jennings and Harper. The top four spots in the A&M order batted just 1-15 with LaDale Hayes collecting the only hit among the group. Jerard Thomas continued his hitting streak to four games with a base knock as well. Harper also extended his hitting streak to four games.

Samford's Mason Meredith finished the game 0-3, which ended his hitting streak at 29 games. Kyle Putkonen got the win for Samford (16-29).
