Box Score / Katrich Williams scored a career-high 30 points as the Alabama A&M women’s basketball team defeated top ranked Prairie View, 68-62, at Elmore Gym Sat. Jan. 30, 2010. This marks the first win against the Panthers since the 2006-07 campaign. Whiquitta Tobar tallied 15 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 mark at the stripe in 29 minutes of action. With the win, A&M improves to 9-8 on the season and 5-3 in the SWAC. The Bulldogs are back in action on Mon. Feb. 1 when they host Texas Southern beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs were down by as many as six, 15-9, midway through the first period until a Nesfayia Watkins layup ignited a 13-6 run to take a lead that A&M would sustain for the rest of the game. In the second half, A&M took its largest margin of the game, 64-51, with 1:11 remaining in regulation. The Panthers closed the game with an 11-4 run, but the Bulldogs walked away with the 68-62 victory.
For Prairie View, Latara Darrett recorded a team-high 26 points off 9-of-18 shootings from the floor. Candice Thomas had 13 points, while Robin Jones tallied 11 points and nine boards. The Panthers shot 40 percent from the floor (20-for-50) and 85 percent from the foul line (17-for-20). The loss drops Prairie View to 10-7 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
The Bulldogs held a slight 35-32 edge on the glass, and scored 36 points in the paint. A&M also converted 28 PVAM miscues into 22 points. The Bulldogs went 23-for-56 from the field for a 41.1 shooting clip.
A&M will host Texas Southern on Mon. Feb. 1. The game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
