Box Score / Alabama A&M captured its first win in 2010 by defeating Jackson State on the road, 70-53. Katrich Williams scored a game-high 15 points in 27 minutes of action. Shaurice Miller tallied a career-high 12 points off of perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the field. Freshman Danielle Oneal also scored a career-high 11 points off the bench. The Bulldogs are back in action on Wed. when they travel to face Grambling State.
A&M won the battle of the boards, 39-31. As a team, the Bulldogs went 24-for-46 from the floor (56.5 percent). With the victory, A&M improves to 5-5 on the season and 1-0 in the SWAC.
The Bulldogs started the game with an 11-0 run, highlighted by a Williams trey. The Tigers got on the scoreboard at the 16:53 mark off a free throw by Tiffany Kellum. A&M rattled off six more unanswered points over the next two-plus minutes to take a 17-1 lead with just over 14 minutes remaining in the period. JSU used an 11-3 run to slice into the advantage and cut it to 27-16 at 7:57. The Bulldogs pushed the spread back to 19 with eight unanswered, however. A&M took a comfortable 40-26 cushion heading into the half.
Williams led all scorers at the half with 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting. Nesfayia Watkins chipped in with eight. The Bulldogs shot 53.8 percent from the field, while holding Jackson State to just a 28.6 clip.
In the second half, the Tigers ripped off nine straight unanswered to cut it to 44-35 at the 17:59 mark. A&M pushed its margin back to double-digits with a Miller layup. Jackson State brought themselves to within 10, 56-46 midway through the second 20, but could not break the double-digit bearier, however.
For the Tigers, Mar'chetta Parker had 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, while Daria Hester had 12.
