Alabama A&M was led by Katrich Williams’ 12 points and three swipes as the Bulldogs edged Grambling State in their second straight conference win on Wednesday. Danielle O’neal scored nine points off 4-of-8 shooting. Whiquitta Tobar and Brittney Carter tallied eight points. With the victory, A&M moves to 6-5 on the season and 2-0 in the conference. The Bulldogs will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday Jan. 9 for a 4 p.m. tip.
The Tigers opened up scoring with a quick basket in the first minute of play. A three-pointer by Whiquitta Tobar at the 18:39 mark put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. Grambling went on a 13-4 run over a six-plus span to take a 15-7 margin at 12:33. A&M used a jumper from Williams, a free-throw by Watkins, and six points from Johnson to slice into the deficit to trail 19-16 with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. A shot at the stripe by Marshall gave the Bulldogs a 32-31 edge heading into the lockerrooms.
O’neal led all scorers in the first 20 with seven points, while Johnson chipped in with six. The Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the floor (12-for-24).
In the second stint, GSU immediately scored a basket to retake the lead, 34-32. A layup by Williams gave A&M the slim advantage again at the 18:41 mark. Although the Tigers and Bulldogs battled back and forth throughout the half, A&M never relinquished its lead.
As a team, the Bulldogs went 20-for-46 from the floor (43.5 percent) and held a 37-26 edge on the glass.
For the Tigers, Kiara Marshall scored a game-high 18 points in 38 minutes of action. Ashley Cooper chipped in with seven points.
