HUNTSVILLE, Al. - The happy homecoming for China Antoine didn't turn out quite right.
A former Bob Jones High School star, Antoine came to town with her University of Minnesota teammates Tuesday night to play Alabama A&M and the Bulldogs spoiled the celebration.
To be more specific, Whiquitta Tobar spoiled the celebration.
Tobar scored 31 points, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key with just over six minutes left that gave A&M the lead for good, as the Bulldogs posted their biggest win in school history by beating the Golden Gophers 75-68 at Elmore Gym.
"We're happy that she got a chance to come home, but we understand that people schedule those games because they think they can win," said Tobar, who was 8-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range and 12-of-15 from the foul line.
"We took that as a sign of motivation and we wanted to come in and show them it wasn't going to be an easy game."
A&M improved to 4-3 with the victory. Minnesota fell to 7-5.
The Bulldogs raced out to an 11-4 lead less than five minutes into the game as Tobar scored nine early points.
The Golden Gophers responded with a 14-4 run to take their first lead of the game at 18-15 with just over 10 minutes left as Katie Loberg and Leah Cotton combined for 10 points.
A&M regained control and outscored Minnesota 20-9 the rest of the way to take a 35-27 lead at intermission.
"We battled," A&M coach Altherias Warmley said. "We never backed down. Even when things weren't going our way, we still battled."
Brittney Strickland hit a 3-pointer to open the second half to give A&M its largest lead of the game at 38-27, but Minnesota began to chip away at the lead and pulled even on a pair of free throws by Kiara Buford that made it 42-all with 13:17 remaining.
Kristen Dockery's layup gave the Golden Gophers 53-51 lead with 7:53 remaining, but the Bulldogs wouldn't go away.
NaDra Robertson scored inside to tie the game and Tobar drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give A&M the lead for good at 56-53.
"They had gone under the screen all night and they weren't respecting my shot so when I saw that she went under the screen, I took it," Tobar said.
"That probably took the wind out of our sails," Minnesota coach Pam Borton said. "We had done a great job of getting back in the game. We took the lead and I thought we were going to hang on, but Tobar came down and hit a couple of big shots and they had everything going their way."
Tobar ignited a 10-2 run that pushed A&M's lead to 69-60 with a minute left and the outcome was never in doubt.
"Tobar is a competitor," Warmley said. "Big time players step up in big time games and she did that tonight. I don't think she was going to let anybody come in here and take her shine."
Strickland backed Tobar with 11 points, while Shaurice Miller had nine.
Cotton led Minnesota with 21 points. Antoine finished with two points, one assist, three turnovers and two steals in 35 minutes.
"We didn't play the way we know how to play," Antoine said. "We didn't show up. They were ready and they came out on top."
Warmley couldn't have been more proud.
"This team is getting closer to what I expected," she said. "We've set the bar high and in the past we haven't quite reached it, but tonight showed me we're getting closer."
