TUSCALOOSA- The Alabama A&M women's basketball team fell to the University of Alabama Crimson Tide 67-62 on Monday in Coleman Coliseum.
Alabama led for the entire second half, but had to work hard to put away the Lady Bulldogs (4-5) in the game's final minutes.
After A&M cut the lead to three points at the 1:11 mark, the Crimson Tide’s Ericka Russell calmly put down two free throws with 43 seconds remaining to give the Tide a 64-59 lead. A Shaurice Miller three-pointer with two seconds remaining would be the Lady Bulldogs final points of their fifth non-conference loss of the season.
Junior guard Whiquitta Tobar finished with a team high 16 points and 10 rebounds for her first double double of the season, while freshman forward Jasmine Sanders paced the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points. Freshman guard Brittany Strickland finished the game with 10 points.
For Alabama, Russell scored 14 points, while Kaneisha Horn added 10 points to go along with nine rebounds which led the Tide.
A&M returns to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 28, when they travel to Auburn, Alabama to face the Tigers of Auburn University. This will serve as the final non-conference contest for the Lady Bulldogs. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
