The Alabama A&M women's basketball team mounted a 15-6 run in the last 7:30 to edge the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley, 60-56 in Itta Bena, Miss. Katrich Williams scored eight points in that run en-route to her 16 points. Dominisha Johnson finished with 13 points in 13 minutes, including the last four points in the final stretch to help seal the A&M victory. Shaurice Miller tallied 12 points in a season-high 33 minutes of action. The Bulldogs are back in action on Sat. Feb. 13 when they host in-state SWAC rival Alabama State for a 4 p.m. tip.
In the second half, the Bulldogs were down by as many as 12 points, 48-36, with just under 13 minutes remaining in regulation. A&M used seven unanswered to chip into the deficit to cut it to 48-43 at the 8:29 mark. MVSU pushed the spread to 50-43 off a basket by Ka'Neishia Smith on the next possesion, however. A&M took its first advantage, 51-50, since the 16:22 mark of the first half. The Bulldogs and Devilettes battled back and forth in the last four minutes, but turnovers by Mississippi Valley in the final minute sealed the win for A&M.
The Bulldogs and Devilettes were even on the glass with 35 apiece. Both teams also were also even, shooting just over 39 percent for the game. The win improved A&M to 11-9 overall and 7-4 in league play.
For Valley, Smith led her team with 15 points. Alia Frank and Ashley Brown finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively. The loss drops MVSU to 6-16 overall and 3-8 in the SWAC.
The Bulldogs host Alabama State on Sat. Feb. 13. The game is slated to start at 4 p.m.
