NORMAL – Alabama A&M junior guard Whiquitta Tobar scored a game high 21 points as the Lady Bulldogs defeated Grambling State in overtime 61-55 Tuesday night in Elmore Gymnasium.
The Blytheville, Arkansas native dropped 15 points in the second half, after scoring two in the first. Tobar also hauled in a six rebounds and totaled four steals.
After holding a three point lead (24-21) at the break, the Lady Tigers caught fire in the second half, shooting 50% from the floor. With 6:21 remaining in regulation the Lady Tigers had built a 42-36 lead. A&M rallied to tie the game on a three pointer from freshman guard Brittney Strickland with: 17 seconds on the clock.
“Brittany’s confident she will hit every shot she takes,” said head coach Altherias Warmley.
The score would represent the final basket of regulation as the game went to the Maroon & White’s second overtime contest knotted at 51 this season.
In the extra session, the Lady Bulldogs would go on to outscore the Lady Tigers 10-4, six points of which came via the charity stripe. A&M finished 6 of 8 from the free throw line for 75 percent in OT.
For Grambling (4-8, 0-1 SWAC) Jasher Blocker finished with 16 points followed by Kristen Harper’s 16.
A&M (5-6, 1-0 SWAC) will return to action on Thursday, January 6, as they host JacksonStateUniversity. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. in the T. M. Elmore Gymnasium.
