Prairie View shuts down the Lady Bulldogs

PRAIRIE VIEW – Prairie View A&M takes over sole possession of second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference as the Panthers defeated the Lady Bulldogs 69-49 on Monday night. With the loss A&M drops to 10-9 overall and 6-3 in conference play.


Danielle O’Neal had the hot hand for A&M.  She quickly nailed back-to-back three pointers to keep the Lady Bulldogs close, with 10:53 remaining in the first half.  O’Neal was the only scoring factor with 10 points when Whiquitta Tobar picked up two fouls and sat out the entire first half.


The Maroon and White was four for 11 from behind the arc in the first half, and went into intermission with a 26-23 lead.  


Down three in the seconds the Panthers would go on a 24-7 scoring run that the Maroon & White would never recover from.  A free throw by O’Neal broke the scoring drought that lasted over six minutes.  The Lady Bulldogs was unable to find a rhythm in the field falling for the ninth occasion this season.


As a team, A&M was held to a 38.6 shooting clip (22-for-57), but held a 43-35 advantage on the boards over PV.  A&M also had 23 bench points and scored 10 points off 15 Panthers miscues.


In the second period, Prairie View led by as many as 21, 50-31, on a three pointer from Robin Jones. The Panthers pushed the spread to 60-31 with just over six minutes to play.  The Lady Bulldogs only answer in the final half was an 18-8 run in the final six minutes. 

 

Freshman guard Brittney Strickland led all scorers with 20 points, O’Neal finish with 11 points and a team high of eight rebounds.


Sharde Henry led PVAMU with 18 points, while teammates Robin Jones and Siarra Soliz scored 17 and 13 points respectively.


Next on the schedule for A&M are the Devils of Mississippi Valley State University.  MVSU will visit “The Hill” on Saturday, February 5, for a 4 p.m. tip.  It will be “Take a Kid to the Game Day” all kids 12 and under get in free.
