LORMAN - Alabama A&M lose a heartbreaker to Alcorn State University as the Lady Braves held on to muzzle the Lady Bulldogs 64-63 Saturday afternoon, in Mississippi.
Alcorn State forward Tiffany Stewart made two free throws with 9.6 seconds of play left and gave the Lady Braves a 64-60 lead. The Lady Bulldog's point leader, guard Whiquitta Tobar, heaved in a long three-pointer with 0.3 seconds to play. ASU inbounded the ball and celebrated the victory.
Alcorn State had four players in double digit scoring, paced by junior guard Kiara Ruffin 17 points. Carolinsia Crumbly followed her with 14; Renelle Richmond scored 11 while Stewart added 10.
Tobar led all scorers and was the only player to score in double figures with 26 points. Nesfayia Watkins and Danielle O'Neal each scored nine. Tobar also led both teams with nine rebounds but Alcorn outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs 42-31,
With the win the Ladies from the reservation secures the third place spot moving past the Lady Bulldogs in SWAC play with a 9-5 mark. The Lady Bulldogs are now 8-5 in the conference and have lost both games played against the Lady Braves this season.
Next, the Bulldogs are the road to face the Jaguars of Southern University on Monday, Feb. 21. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
