HUNTSVILLE, AL. - Alabama A&M's hopes of winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season title suffered a major blow Saturday afternoon as Mississippi Valley State came away with a 76-75 victory in double overtime at Elmore Gym.
"This probably took us out of contention," A&M coach Altherias Warmley said. "We've got to depend on other teams to lose and that's not the position you want to be in."
The game was tied 57 apiece at the end of regulation and 65 apiece at the end of the first overtime.
The Bulldogs led by as many as five points in the second overtime and were up 75-72 after Nesfayia Watkins hit two free throws with 39 seconds left, but A&M couldn't hang on.
Brittney Lakes hit two free throws with 25 seconds left to pull MVSU within 75-74 and after Whiquitta Tobar turned the ball over with 19 seconds left, the Devilettes got the ball back and Ka'Neshia Smith was fouled with nine seconds left and hit two free throws to make it 76-75.
Watkins missed a jumper as time expired as the Bulldogs lost for the fourth time in their last five games.
"We weren't able to run our offense," Warmley said after her team shot 34 percent (22-of-65) from the field, 18 percent (3-of-17) from 3-point range and 65 percent (28-of-43) from the foul line. "Their zone hurt us and we went back to old habits and were unable to execute."
The loss dropped A&M to 10-10 overall and 6-4 in league play. MVSU improved to 8-13 and 6-4.
Tobar finished with a game-high 28 points, but was only 8-of-22 from the field and 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. Watkins scored 13 points, while Sanders added 10.
Smith led MVSU with 26 points. Lakes finished with 16 and De"Kisha Fondon added 14.
