NORMAL – The Alabama A&M women’s basketball team broke their two game losing slide with a 65-50 thumping of the Lady Lions of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday night.
A&M (11-10, 7-4 SWAC) was led by Whiquitta Tobar who posted 18 points, eight rebounds and pair of assists and steals. Freshman Jasmine Sanders finished the night with nine points, seven rebounds and two assists.
The Lady Bulldogs won the points in the paint battle 20-12, points off turnovers 13-10, second chance points 16-13 and bench points 21-9.
The Maroon & White struggled in the first half shooting 7 of 33 from the field for only 21 percent. The second proved much different as A&M found a rhythm and scored the fourth most points in one half this season outscoring the Lady Lions 39-29. Alabama A&M shot 10 for 23 for 44% a high in the last five contest played.
This was Tobar’s 18th contest this season with double digit points and her second straight. This also was head coach Altherias Warmley 85th career SWAC win.
The game was duped the WBCA Think Pink game. It is an initiative that is a global, unified effort for the WBCA nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
During the half-time of the men’s game coach Warmley, cheerleaders and fans help formed a human ribbon and held a moment of silence for all those with breast cancer.
The road awaits A&M as they travel to Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 12 for a 3:00 date with in-state rival Alabama State University.
