GARLAND, Texas - The 2011 Farmers Insurance SWAC Basketball Tournament is underway at the Special Events Center starting with women's hoops: No. 7 Jackson State and No. 2 Prairie View A&M.

Following a two year absence from the SWAC Tournament, the Jackson State (JSU) Lady Tigers made their return to face the Prairie View A&M (PVAMU) Lady Panthers in the quarterfinals. PVAMU defeated Jackson State 56-40.

JSU's Ayanna Hardy-Fuller recorded her fourth career double-double, her first post-season double-double, in her SWAC Tournament debut. She finished with a team high 11 points and a game high 18 rebounds in 38 minutes of play. Rachel Jones followed with nine points and three assists in 34 minutes.

Lady Panther Dominique Smith led all scorers with 17 points in 37 minutes. Siarra Soliz added 15 points and Robin Jones recorded a double-double of with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Prairie View A&M led 9-4 at the 14:38 mark in the first half. Jackson State cut that lead to 13-12 by the 7:47 mark. Jackson State trailed 22-17 at halftime. In the first half the Lady Tigers shot 25% from the field (6-24), 16.7% from three-point range (1-6) and was perfect from the free throw line (4-4). PVAMU shot 37% from the field (10-27), 14.3% in treys (1-7) and 25% from the charity stripe (1-4). Jackson State outrebounded Prairie View A&M 19-17, but had four more turnovers than the Lady Panthers.

For the game, JSU shot 25% from the field (13-52), 14.3% in threes (2-14) and 60% from the line (12-20). PVAMU shot 39.6% from the floor (21-53), 23.1% from three-point range (3-13) and 68.8% from the line (11-16).

Grant Maxey and Tyrone Hanson combined to score 27 points to lead the Jackson State Tigers to a 50-38 victory over the Prairie View A&M Panthers in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 Southwestern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament Wednesday afternoon.

Maxey finished with a game high 14 points and pulled down four rebounds in 25 minutes of play. He connected on 4-13 shot attempts and went 5-6 from the free throw line. Hanson scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds in 31 minutes. Hanson, the conference leader in three-point shooting, connected on two of his five three-point attempts. Jenirro Bush, the third leading scorer in the conference, came off the bench to score four points. De'Suan Dixon pulled down a game-high seven rebounds to go along with a six point effort.

Brandon Webb was the only Panther to score in double figures. He scored 10 points and was perfect from the field, going 4-4 in 22 minutes of play. Trant Simpson followed with nine points in 28 minutes. Duwan Kornegay led the team in rebounding with five.

Neither team shot well. Jackson State connected on 30% of its field goal attempts (12-40) and Prairie View shot 31% (13-42). JSU's defense and rebounding edge was the difference in the game. JSU held PVAM to 38 total points (17 points in the second half) which is a season for the Tigers. JSU out-rebounded PVAM 38-27.

The Tigers got off to a sluggish start over the first eight minutes of the game, trailing 10-6 at the 12 minute mark in the first half. JSU ended the first half with a 6-1 run to take a three point lead into halftime (24-21). In the first half, JSU shot 31.8% from the field (7-22), 12.5% in threes (1-8) and 64.3% from the free throw line (9-14). Prairie View shot 29.2% from the floor (7-24), 11.1% from three-point range (1-9) and 60% from the line (6-10).

The score was tied four times and had four lead changes.

Jackson State returns to action to take on the winner of the No. 3 Mississippi Valley/No. 6 Grambling State) game in the semi-final round Friday, Mar. 11. Tip-off for the semi-final round game is set for 2:30 pm at the Special Events Center.

The No. 8 Alabama State (ASU) women's basketball team dropped a 58-39 decision to No. 1 Southern in a SWAC tournament quarterfinal matchup at the Special Events Center.

Despite committing 17 first half turnovers, ASU only trailed by six points at the break. The Lady Hornets outshot the Lady Jaguars from the field making 40 percent of its attempts compared to Southern's 34 percent.

Still only down by six points (33-27) with 14:59 left in the game, the Lady Jags would later extend their lead to 39-27. With less than nine minutes left to play, Southern outscored Alabama State 19-9 and the Hornets would not get any closer than six points after that.

Tanika Jackson led ASU with nine points and five rebounds. Millicent Jones scored eight points and Tamara Wadlington chipped in six points and eight boards.

Southern was led by Ashley Augerson's 12 points. Freda Allen and Jamie Floyd scored 10 points each.

The Lady Jags scored 24 points off of 26 Lady Hornet turnovers. Southern also scored 30 of its 58 points in the paint.

Alabama State ends the season 8-22 overall and 5-13 in the SWAC. Southern improves to 19-10 overall and 16-3 in league play.

The Texas Southern Tigers took their first step in their mission to become the 2011 SWAC Tournament Champions. They defeated Arkansas Pine-Bluff 50-45 in a very tight game.

TSU’s biggest lead was 7 points (13-6) in the first half. They ended the period up 26-21. Arkansas Pine Bluff closed the gap in the second half. They took a 31-30 lead at the 13:50 mark. The game stayed within 3 points with both teams exchanging the lead. TSU fell behind by 5 points (42-37) with 8:17 left to play. But they rallied to tie the game at 42 then worked their way to a 5 point win.

“We got this target on our backs and we know they are coming after us,” said head coach Tony Harvey. “It’s going to be a dog fight but we respond well to adversity. We’ll just take it one game at a time.”

Travele Jones led all scorers with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Lawrence Johnson-Danner had 13 points. Kevin Galloway had 5 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocked shots. Harrison Smith had 5 points and 5 rebounds.

The Tigers will face the winner of the Alabama State and Alabama A&M game. Texas Southern’s next game is on Friday at 8:00pm.
