NORMAL – The Bulldog baseball team was swept in their first three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference home series at the Alabama A&M baseball field. The Braves of Alcorn State University defeated A&M 8-4, 20-0, and 14-4 during the two day event.

A&M (2-16, 0-6 SWAC) went into the top of the ninth inning in the first game but allowed four runs and was only able to answer with one of their own to fall 8-4 in the first of three contest. Kwency Duarte led the Bulldogs at the plate finishing one of four with a run and a RBI. Demarcus Steward struck out four in five innings pitched.

A 12 run second inning for Alcorn set up the worst defeat this season for the Maroon & White. Norbert Riggins struck out six batters but gave up six hits and allowed three earned runs during the second game on Saturday, March 19. Five different Bulldogs accounted for the offense in only the fourth contest that didn’t see an A&M run during the 2011 season.

In the final game of the series A&M jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning. But once again a big second inning that saw six runs cross the plate for the Braves gave Alcorn the lead and eventually the series. Sanchez Tucker struck out four but gave up eight runs. This was after starter Eric Brandon gave up five hits and six runs after facing 15 batters. Tucker, however, led the Bulldogs at the plate going two of four with two runs batted in and a run of his own.

A&M will welcome cross-town rival the University of Alabama at Huntsville on Tuesday, Mach 22. The scheduled first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Bulldog baseball field. This will serve as the Maroon & White’s final home game during the month of March.
