Home Opener for Softball; Baseball to host Hornets

NORMAL -- The Alabama A&M softball team will host Alcorn State University to a three-game SWAC series beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 1.  The Braves will serve as the first home opponent for head coach Nedra Brown and the 2011 edition of Maroon & White softball.
 
The first lady of Alabama A&M University Mrs. Abbiegail Hugine will throw out the first pitch for the April opener.

The Bulldogs 2-15 will close out their first home weekend series on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.  
 
Sophomore catcher Jasmine Riley leads A&M and the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a .476 batting average. Riley also tops the squad with 16 RBIs while Fayesha Ward is second with eight runs batted in.

Alcorn enters the weekend series with a 13-16 overall record.  As a team, the Braves hit .239 and have belted 10 home runs on the year.  Leading the team in that category is Brittane Crayton with a .308 batting average.  Barbara White leads the team with 20 RBIs.
 
The Alabama A&M baseball team will host in-state rival Alabama State University to a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series this weekend.

The Maroon & White baseball team (3-19, 1-8 SWAC) earned their first Southwestern Athletic Conference victory by sneaking out a 6-5 win in the final contest of the three-game series with Jackson State University. The win marked the first time the Bulldogs defeated JSU in Jackson in 10 years.

Leading A&M at the plate is senior Kency Duarte with a .358 batting average.

The Hornets bring in a 7-12 overall record with Josue Quinones leading the team with a .550 batting average.
 
The three-game eastern division series will begin at noon on Saturday with a double header and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
Currently ASU holds the fourth spot in the Eastern division while the Maroon & White is fifth. The winner of this weekend’s matches could sit comfortable in the final spot to make the conference postseason tournament.

All events will be held at the Bulldog baseball/softball fields on “The Hill”.

The events are free and open to the public.
