NORMAL – The Alabama A&M baseball team split with the Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils 4-2 and 16-2 in the first two contest of their three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern division series.

In game one the Bulldogs (7-25, 4-11 SWAC) opened the scoring with the two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. First-baseman Nobert Riggins doubled to left field in his second chance at bat. Second-baseman Joseph Bryant then hit a double of his own to score Riggins.  Third-baseman James Brown would then advance to first base on a fielding error by the Delta Devils shortstop allowing Brown to score the second run.

Mississippi Valley then scored a run in the top of the fifth and sixth inning to tie the score at two. The eighth inning proved exciting as the first batter, centerfielder Juan Lopez, singled to right field. Right-fielder Kency Duarte then hit his first homerun of the year, a two-run shot over the center left field wall, leading the Bulldogs to their fourth league contest victory.

Starting pitcher Sanchez Tucker went 8.1 innings to earn his second win of the year. Bryant and Brown each accounted for two hits and a RBI.

The second game of today’s doubleheader was all Valley as they accounted for 14 runs in the fifth and seventh innings. The only bright spot for A&M was their first triple play of the season.

In the top of the sixth inning with runners on first and second base the Delta Devils designated hitter Denarvus Turner lined into Brown’s glove, who then threw the ball to Riggins, who then threw the ball to Bryant recording the rare feat.

Five different batters picked up the five hits in the game for A&M. Tucker and Bryant scored the Bulldogs two runs.

The final game of the series will be played at noon on Sunday April 17, at the Bulldog baseball field on the campus of Alabama A&M. Admission is free.
