A&M stumbles against Valley, falling 69-67

NORMAL - Alabama A&M women’s basketball suffered its first home loss of the season with a 69-67 heartbreaker to Mississippi Valley State in Elmore Gymnasium on Monday afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs had a 36-28 intermission lead, but a 13-4 MVSU run gave the Devilettes their first lead with 12:46 remaining in the second half. From there, Valley built its largest lead 67-58 with 2:43 remaining.

The Maroon and White connected on two layups and five free throws to tie the game at 67 all with seven seconds remaining. A layup by Valley’s KaNeshia Smith gave Devilettes its second lead and win on the night.

Sophomore Jasmine Sanders played an outstanding game earning her first double-double of her career with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

The All-American candidate Whiquitta Tobar chipped in with 17 points while teammate Shaundray Davis added 15. This was Tobar’s 37th contest in her career she has scored in double figures. Davis scored in double figures for the seventh time this season.

The leading scorer for Mississippi Valley was Khristina Clemmons with 15 points.

MVSU outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs 42-35, but A&M held the points in the paint to their advantage 34-30.

Next up the Lady Bulldogs will travel to face in-state rival Alabama State University on Saturday, January 14, game time is set for 3:00 p.m. The game can be seen “Live” on SWAC-TV.
