AMES – Head Coach Willie Hayes club shot a season low 26% in their first loss of the season to the Cyclones of Iowa State 98-40, Monday night at Hilton Coliseum.
“You have to realize that when you play against a team as athletic as those guys are, they are a defensive minded team. That was one of my main concerns the first two to three minutes coming out of the gate," said head coach Willie Hayes. “They did exactly what I thought they were going to do. They were aggressive defensively and offensively.”
Only one A&M player scored in double digits. Junior Jeremy Crutcher led the Bulldogs with 10 points.
The Bulldogs shot six for 25 for 24% in the first half a season low.
The second half saw A&M shoot 29 percent from the floor (8-27). The 18 turnovers really hurt the Maroon & White throughout the game. They were outscored 54-14 in the paint, 28-4 in points off turnovers and 37-17 in bench points.
With the loss, the Maroon & White falls to 1-1 on the year.
Five players from ISU scored in double-figures. Tyrus McGee led all players with 18 points and five rebounds. McGee went four for six from behind the arc, and two for three from the charity stripe.
Georges Niang was second on the team with 17, followed by Melvin Ejim, Will Clyburn, and Korie Lucious with 16, 15 and 10 respectively.
Alabama A&M returns to action Thursday night against Jacksonville State at the Pete Mathews Coliseum in Jacksonville, Alabama.
