Women's Basketball falls to UAB 72-53

Box Score

Normal-The Alabama A&M women's basketball team fell 72-53 to the UAB Blazers Monday evening in Elmore gymnasium.

Senior Danielle O’Neal led A&M with 12 points and four rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs fall to 1-1 on the season, with a loss. Allowing easy baskets in transition and getting into quick foul trouble lead A&M to fall behind early.

After a missed shot and foul by A&M, UAB went on a 16-3 run to build a 19-point lead at the 4:35 mark in the first half. By the half-time break, the lead decreased by three. The Lady Bulldogs took a 16-point deficit into the break (36-20).

The second half saw the Maroon & White come out with a renewed purpose. The team stepped up their defensive effort in the final 20 minutes. Holding the Blazers to seven points in the first six minutes of play allowed the Lady Bulldogs to trim the UAB lead to 12 by the 9:57 mark.

The Maroon and White narrowly lost the second half scoring battle, as they scored just three points less than the Blazers (36-33). However, the first half deficit was too much to overcome, as Alabama A&M lost their first game of the season 72-53.

Shooting was the driving force behind the A&M defeat as UAB shot 51% on 26 of 51 from the field compared to A&M who shot 32 percent on 15 of 47.

Red-shirt sophomore Brittney Strickland and O’Neal both scored double figures (10 & 12) to lead the Lady Bulldog offense.

O’Neal scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half. The board’s queen on the evening was junior Jasmine Sanders with eight. In her first game of the season, Sanders had eight points, eight rebounds and three blocks in a losing effort.

UAB was led by Amber Jones with 23 and Karisma Chapman with 21.

The next contest for Lady Bulldogs will be November 18th versus Auburn University tipping off at 2 p.m.
