AAMU Falls To the Jayhawks 76-59

Lawrence – The Alabama A&M women’s basketball team fell 76-59 to the Jayhawks of Kansas on Friday evening at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-3) dropped their third game of the season and shot 44 percent (26-for-58) from the floor and 55 percent (5-for-9) from the free throw line. Kansas won the battle on the glass, grabbing 49 total rebounds to A&M‘s 23.

Kansas' 76 points are the team's most scored so far this season while Alabama A&M's 59 are also the most points the No. 22 Jayhawks have given up in 2012-13.

Head coach Altherias Warmley squad witnessed Kansas go on a 9-2 scoring run over the first three minutes of the first half. The Lady Bulldogs countered with an 8-3 run over the next 3:36 before the Jayhawks were able to open a 28-18 lead at the 6:26 mark. Following a quick two-point answer from NaDra Robertson, KU would then go back up by 10.

The two teams continued to trade baskets for the rest of the first 20 minutes with the Lady Bulldogs pulling within six points at the final media timeout of the first half. Kansas' then hit their only three-pointer of the first half to push to its highest first-half point total of the season with 40 points. A&M's 31 were the most given up by KU in the first half this year.

The Maroon and White were led by NeDra Robertson with 12 points, while teammates Ebony Johnson and Shundray Davis each added 11.

Kansas and Alabama A&M traded baskets to start the second half with the Lady Bulldogs closing the Jayhawk advantage to eight just three minutes into the half. The leading scorer for Kansas, Carolyn Davis, then scored eight of their first 14 points in the half to help the Jayhawks to a 57-44 lead with 13:51 remaining to play. The Maroon & White answered with a 7-4 run over the next 2:57 to pull back within 10.

A three pointer then gave Kansas a 17-point lead with 3:12 remaining in the second half. NeDra Robertson answered for the Lady Bulldogs with a jumper before Kansas CeCe Harper hit her layup to put Kansas up 17 points for good.

The Lady Bulldogs scored 38 points in the paint and 18 off the bench. They also committed 12 turnovers, compared to the Jayhawks 17. A&M converted 16 points from those miscues.

The Jayhawks shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field, their best first-half shooting percentage this season, while holding Alabama A&M to 46.7 percent (14-of-30).

Kansas was led by Carolyn Davis with 19 points, and Angel Goodrich, who finished with 15.

AAMU returns to action when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 14th to face the University of Memphis at 7 p.m.
