Bulldogs swept by Valley

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

NORMAL – The youngest head coach in America realized his dreams of postseason play came to an end when the Devils of Mississippi Valley State University defeated the Bulldogs 10-5 ending their three-game series.

In game one in Itta Bena, Mississippi, the Bulldogs posted five hits but left seven on base to fall 5-0.
Julio Nunez went 2 for 4 at the plate while Josh Freeman earned his seventh loss of the year in eight innings of work.  The freshman gave up four hits and five runs while striking out five.

Game two of Saturday’s doubleheader was the deciding factor as the Bulldogs took the Devils to 12 innings before falling 4-3.

Alabama A&M took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when T.J. Lindsey grounded out to third scoring Brandyn Crutcher. Valley then scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Crutcher scored again on a Valley error.  Jordan Friend then scored the Bulldogs final run of the contest off of Norbert Riggins single to right field.

MVSU evened the score at three all in the bottom of the ninth inning.  Three more innings later Valley scored the winning run dropping the Bulldogs in only their second extra inning contest of 2012.

Sunday’s afternoon contest was the final opportunity for A&M to steal a win from the Devils.  It was not to be so as A&M fell 10-5.

Juan Lopez ended the game going 2 for 4 batting with two runs scored. Allen Belue earned the loss giving up six hits and seven runs in four innings of work.

The Maroon and White have only one SWAC victory in 2012 and have been mathematically eliminated from post season play due to their fifth place standing in the Eastern Division.

A&M has only six league games remaining while the fourth place team in the East (MVSU) has won 11 conference contests.

Only the top four teams from each division advance to the Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament.
