Lady Bulldogs hang on to sweep Lady Braves 55-44

Box Score
LORMAN – Head coach Altherias Warmely moved one game closer to her 150th victory on “The Hill” as A&M captured their eighth win of the season and seventh in the conference with a 55-44 win over Alcorn State Saturday afternoon.

The win gives A&M a season sweep over the Lady Braves (1-22, 1-13 SWAC) for the first time in coach Warmley’s career.

Jasmine Sanders led the team with 10 points and 11 rebounds recording her fifth double double of the year.  NaDra Robertson posted 13 points while point guard Shundray Davis scored nine points and dished out two assists.
Alcorn was led by Renelle Richmond with 13 points while Au-Juvan Andrews secured six rebounds and eight points.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the contest with a steal and layup by Brittney Strickland.  From there the Lady Braves and Bulldogs would trade the lead on four different occasions.  Senior NaDra Robertson hit a free-throw with 19:09 left in the first to give A&M their largest lead of five points 5-0.  Alcorn would use their scrappiest and small lineup to defend the Maroon & White which resulted in A&M’s six first half turnovers.  The teams continued to trade baskets until freshman Christian Hooper hit a three to give A&M a 25-22 half-time lead.

Out of the break Robertson hit a lay-up to give A&M a 27-22 lead, then hit the front end of two free-throws to push the lead to six.  Alcorn would make a run of their own tying the score at 37-37 at the 10:39 mark, but a three-pointer by Taylor Sippal halted that momentum.  The Maroon & White then used their 41% percent shooting and Alcorn’s 26 percent from the field to build and 11 point lead and eventually a win over the Lady Braves.

The sweep is a first in school history for the women’s basketball program during their Division I era and Warmley's first win in Lorman, Mississippi.

“Our team played well enough to pull out this victory,” said coach Warmley.  “Alcorn is always tough and they have been in every game they have played.  We just played a little tougher and were able to come out with a victory.”

Next up is a trip to Baton Rouge, La to face the second place Jaguars of Southern University.  Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18th.
