Bulldog Baseball wins in extra innings

Box Score

Normal -  The Bulldogs earn their first win of the season when they defeated the Mastodons 7-6 in game one of Sunday’s Bulldog Classic doubleheader, but fell 7-6 versus Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne in the nightcap.

The first contest went 10 innings while game two of the doubleheader was over after six. Allen Belue took the mound in the first game. He threw four innings and struck out five.

In game one AAMU scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth. Patrick Dodson led the inning off with a double; he then advanced to third, and scored on a pass ball. A&M scored three more runs in the fifth inning to gain the lead 4-2.

Each team added two runs in the eighth then IPFW tied the game late with a run in the top of the ninth. The Bulldogs scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth, when Cornell Woods singled and scored Julio Nunez for the game winning run.

The Bulldogs ended the game with 10 hits while committing two errors.
Dodson lead A&M with three runs batted in, on four attempts. Jordan Benford and Woods each recorded a run batted in.

Game two went a little different as the Bulldogs opened the game with a 3-1 lead after the first inning.  The top of the second IPFW connected on two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch to score four runs and gained a 5-3 advantage.  The lead was extended with two more runs in the top of the fifth but the Bulldogs would not lie down.

Once again Patrick Dodson and Julio Nunez would come through at the plate with a single each to get on base and eventually scoring.  Brandon Crutcher would add the final run for AAMU in the sixth but due to darkness the game was called before A&M was able to attempt another dramatic comeback.

Dodson finished 3 for 3 with two runs and a run batted in.  Nunez totaled two runs and two RBI’s after four tries at the plate.  Jordan Friend went two for four at the plate. As a team the Bulldogs posted 10 hits for the second straight game.

After beginning the season 1-3 in the second annual Bulldog Classic, A&M will hit the road for a six game road trip beginning with a date down south I-65 to face Samford University, in Birmingham, Ala. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19th.
